Review: The Golden Compass

Lyra's life is about to change forever as she knows it. First, she saves her uncle when the Master of the college she grew up in tries to poison him. Then, children start disappearing all over. She's fascinated, but fascination turns into indignation when her very best friend becomes one of the children who disappear. She'll soon learn that she has a major role to play in the journey. Bigger than she'll ever know.

I really love this story. This is my second time reading it. I adored it the first time, but I loved it even better the second time around. I've been meaning to re-read it for a long time. Then, I found out they are doing an adaptation on HBO. It looks really good. It's also a great excuse to re-read the trilogy! I'm glad I am. I either forgot about a lot that went on, or it went over my head because I was a teenager. Maybe it was both.

I feel like I had a lot of Lyra's spirit and will when I was a child. I can't name a lot of the characters in the book without spoiling some of them. Let's just say that it's easy to love the protagonists and hate the antagonists. I do kind of wish that we could have seen more of some people. I love that it was from Lyra's point of view.

This story was so magical to me the first time around. I didn't think I could love it more than I did then. I was wrong. This book has become even more magical to me. The thing that I can't get my head around is people see it as a children's novel. I don't see it as an adult novel, but I don't see it as a children's novel. I'd accept Young Adult, though. There are things that are a little too heavy for children. I still love it.
