Review: The One That Got Away

The One That Got Away The One That Got Away by Charlotte Roth
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Helen is invited to a wedding in Rome. She will be seeing classmates that she hasn't seen in 20 years. Including the one that got away. She struggles with old feelings that come back. She also struggles with self-consciousness about herself and her getting older.

I really enjoyed this story. I honestly thought I was going to hate it in the beginning. It had a lot of Burn Book from Mean Girls vibes. Luckily, I gave it a chance and realized that that's just how they talked. It wasn't a mean girl thing at all. I'm glad I did. This was an incredible and cheesy story. It was very inspirational and unique.

Obviously I really loved Helen. I feel like I related to her in so many ways. I am a very past sentimental being. Her mom and Lori were pretty amazing too. I wish I'd seen more of Rob and Mark. I also wish I'd seen more of 3PO too.

The narrator for this book was Brenda Scott Wlazlo. She did a pretty amazing job. I am very impressed. I'll have to look it up, but I'm pretty sure that I haven't really heard anything else from her before. I could be wrong about that. Either way, I plan to listen to more books by her.

I really did enjoy this story. My first impressions of it were very Mean Girls or cheesy love story. I was wrong. Well, to be fair, it was a cheesy love story, but in a very good way. It was a breath of fresh air. This is one of the best books I've read. I think this might be my favorite book of this author.

Review: The Deadly Floral Affair

The Deadly Floral Affair The Deadly Floral Affair by K.M. Morgan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Daisy is beyond happy. It's her big day. While she's away on honeymoon, the flower shop owner winds up getting shot. The investigation goes on and many people are interrogated. It's the talk of the town.

I really adored this book. It was cute and quirky. It was a very nice and easy book to read. The only thing I really couldn't understand is the disconnect. I felt like there were two different stories going on. I didn't really figure out why Daisy and her wedding and honeymoon fit into the story until the very end. It was nice to meet her.

I enjoyed reading about the characters. But with the book being so short, I didn't really feel like I connected with any of them. They all seemed very wonderful and it's easy to see the small-town vibes in the story. I get the feeling that this book was a part of a series and that I kind of just dove in not knowing anything about the world or the characters.

I really enjoyed the narrator. I don't think I've listened to anything else by Marilyn Rakes before. I am definitely willing to listen to other books narrated by her. She has this very sweet voice that's calming. I listened to the book with my mom and my boyfriend in the car.

This was a very short and sweet read. All three of us who listened to it enjoyed it very much. I'll have to look into other books by this author and by this narrator. It was well written and well narrated.

Review: Mission Impawsible

Mission Impawsible Mission Impawsible by Melanie James
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Kelly and her brother decide to attempt something daring. An accident makes them trigger a spell that frees a cursed bear clan from several centuries before. With the help of her were-bear boyfriend and a few friends, she finds a way to figure out what she did and how to fix it.

I really enjoyed this book. I didn't realize until it was too late that this was the second book in the Karma Inc. Files. I am familiar with The Literal Leigh series so I was familiar with all the characters. It's a very funny book. It has some steamy and sexy parts as well. It enhances the story. I love how the author really just brings a reader into every single part of the story.

I just adore all of the characters! My favorite two are Kelly and Randy. They are just such a sarcastic riot! Gertie is pretty amazing as well. She's just so adorably gullible. I just wish that some of the characters that are in the main series were in this book. I get why they weren't though.

Hollie Jackson was made to narrate this book. I fully believe she was made for the entire series. I think that's why she's one of my favorite narrators of all time. She really sucks you into a story and makes characters' personalities just pop in the best way possible! I really want to get my hands on all of the audiobooks she's ever narrated. I may meet a new author or two that way!

I really did enjoy this book. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I read the first book first. It definitely made me realize that I need to reread the entire Literal Leigh series over again. It's one of my favorite series of all time. It's quirky and adorable. I'll probably wind up reading them a dozen of other times too.

Review: The Golden Compass

The Golden Compass The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Lyra's life is about to change forever as she knows it. First, she saves her uncle when the Master of the college she grew up in tries to poison him. Then, children start disappearing all over. She's fascinated, but fascination turns into indignation when her very best friend becomes one of the children who disappear. She'll soon learn that she has a major role to play in the journey. Bigger than she'll ever know.

I really love this story. This is my second time reading it. I adored it the first time, but I loved it even better the second time around. I've been meaning to re-read it for a long time. Then, I found out they are doing an adaptation on HBO. It looks really good. It's also a great excuse to re-read the trilogy! I'm glad I am. I either forgot about a lot that went on, or it went over my head because I was a teenager. Maybe it was both.

I feel like I had a lot of Lyra's spirit and will when I was a child. I can't name a lot of the characters in the book without spoiling some of them. Let's just say that it's easy to love the protagonists and hate the antagonists. I do kind of wish that we could have seen more of some people. I love that it was from Lyra's point of view.

This story was so magical to me the first time around. I didn't think I could love it more than I did then. I was wrong. This book has become even more magical to me. The thing that I can't get my head around is people see it as a children's novel. I don't see it as an adult novel, but I don't see it as a children's novel. I'd accept Young Adult, though. There are things that are a little too heavy for children. I still love it.

Review: Look Alive Twenty-Five

Look Alive Twenty-Five Look Alive Twenty-Five by Janet Evanovich
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Stephanie finds herself the manager of a deli that has been confiscated when the owner goes FTA. She doesn't like the fact that she's been volunteered for a position she has no experience in until she's offered a nice weekly pay. It's after she gets to the store that she learns that the previous managers of the deli have disappeared lately. All that's left behind is a shoe.

This was one of the more interesting books, to say the least. I really enjoyed it. I especially enjoyed getting to know more about one of my favorite background characters, Hal. It was weird to me that the family wasn't really in this book all that much. I kind of missed Grandma Maazur's quirky wit. I'm sure there's a reason for it.

I will always adore the characters in this series. There's the cynical Stephanie who is a klutz but is extremely lucky. Lula who is loud and out there. Ranger who's dark and mysterious. Morelli who's handsome and flirty. I could go on. I really could. I'll save it so the reader can read all about them for themselves.

I really have enjoyed this entire series. I can't believe I've actually reached the last one. I know that the next one will be out next month, but that's beside the point. I started re-reading this series earlier this year because I couldn't remember where I left off on the series. And now, here I am. Well, here we are since I buddy read it with my Mom. It's been amazing.

Review: The Party Crasher

The Party Crasher The Party Crasher by Erin Bevan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Kit is devastated when the job that she thinks will finally turn her luck around blows up in her face. To top off her humiliation, she meets a man that she hits it off with right away. Brent witnesses a disaster of an event. But he winds up becoming smitten with Kit. Once he finds out her story and that his parents were involved, he decides to withhold who he is from her.

This book is full of predictable tropes. Including the "don't tell her who I really am". I know this is coming out like a bad review, but it's not. Despite all the eye-roll worthy mess of this story, I loved it. I absolutely just adored it. My only criticism is that it wasn't long enough for much of the back story to be built up a little better. It's still a very refreshing read.

The only characters you really get to know fully are Kit and Brent. There are some other characters sprinkled in, but you don't really get too much of them except dialogue. I adored both Kit and Brent, but I'd of loved to see the back story of some of the other characters. Especially Brent's parents. They did a good job for a novella though.

The narrator, Erin Bevan, is just too cute! I love the country accent she has in this book. I will be honestly floored if somebody tells me that her accent is faked. She does such a great job with it. I do have a small critique about her though. There were times that she didn't do tones right for certain characters. It wasn't many times, and it's not really that distracting. I think it happened maybe three times.

I didn't think I'd enjoy this story as much as I did. This was one of my out of my comfort zone picks. I was very pleasantly surprised by the fact that I really enjoyed it. I read over half of it in one sitting. Then, I read the other half in another. I'd of probably read all of it in one sitting if I didn't need sleep and have errands. I fully recommend this for a light and refreshing read.

Review: Nightworld Academy: Term Two

Nightworld Academy: Term Two Nightworld Academy: Term Two by L.J. Swallow
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A new term begins. The group wonders if the teacher who knows what they did will turn them in or keep his word. None of them feel that they can trust him. Jamie has cast a spell from a dangerous book that has put another student away for using it. The book is known to consume people. There is also an investigation about the attack on the hunters that were there that night.

I enjoyed this book much more than I did the first book. Which is weird for me. Normally I LOVE a first book and the rest of the series will fall flat. Or I'll love every book equally. I feel like the first book was more of a set up than anything. This book really gets into the meat of things. I can't wait to continue on.

Maeve doesn't irritate me nearly as much as she did in the first book. I was happy to have gotten to see more of Amelia in this book. And more of Andrei, Jamie, and Ash. I'm not really sure how I feel about the professors. Mainly because they aren't really prominent in the books that much.

I wasn't impressed with the performance of the narrators in the first book. They made a recovery in this book. They did a lot better. I've listened to Sarah L. Colton before and knew how great she's been in other books. I didn't realize until this book that I'm pretty sure I've actually listened to one other book by Steve Campbell before. He says this one word very uniquely.

I really did enjoy the book. I hope that anybody who has read the first book and wasn't fully impressed with it will read this anyways. It definitely picks up. I feel like this is a story that builds and builds until the very end. It's a shame the rest isn't in audio yet. I like to keep the format the same when I read books. If I listen to it in audio, I like to listen to them all in audio. If I read them, I like to read them. I may just make an exception for this one.

Excerpt

Rhett’s cell vibrates and he looks down at the screen.
Rossi is coming after Napolitano’s daughter. We need to get her out of there. See the image, name Isabelle Napolitano, 22 years old, and doesn’t have a clue about the business.
Ok
The image pops up on the cell.
Rhett cold eyes gaze at the photo of Belle. His cold turquoise eyes soften as he stares at her.
Fuck! My Belle is Napolitano’s daughter? Damn! It is a small world. Rossi wants my woman? Hell no! I have to find her. She has to be here in the house and if not? Fuck! I’m going to protect her. She’s mine!
Belle walks into the office, stops, stunned.
“What? How in the world did you find me?”
Belle stares at Rhett, feeling happy and scared.
Who is he? He’s my Rhett? No! This is too bizarre. Something is going on! I need to get to the bottom of this. I’m going crazy with not knowing what’s happening with my family!
“Belle, you know who I am. It’s very important to trust me. We need to leave, now.”
“What? I’m so confused. You’re here to take me? Who are you?”
“Belle, don’t run from me. I’m here to help you. I’m an Elite. Please believe me.”
“Who? An Elite? What does that mean? I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
Rhett takes a step forward, trying to reach her, and pull her close.
Fuck! She's so damn scared. She doesn’t trust me. That cuts deeply. Fuck she doesn’t know anything about her father’s business.
“Belle, I’m here to protect you. Please, take my hand. I’ll explain everything later.”
Belle starts taking small steps back, wide-eyed, watching him closely. She shakes her head, gasping.
“No!”
Omg! He’s one of them? He’s here to take me? Where? Did they kill my Papà? The man that stole my heart, owns my soul killed my Papà! Why? What do they want?
Rhett takes another step forward, the cell dings, and he looks at it.
Napolitano’s guards don’t know what happened. They will stay to protect the residence.
Ok.
Rhett looks up at Belle, takes another step and sprints forward, taking her into his arms.
She’s pissed off. She’s scared. She doesn’t want to listen to me. What the fuck! She doesn’t trust me. She doesn’t know or understands who I am.
“Belle, we need to leave. The rogue Lord wants you.”
Belle pushes against his hard chest, glaring up at him. Her haunted hazel eyes blink rapidly to stop the tears. She inhales deeply, shaking her head, pushing her hands against his shoulders.
“I don’t understand what you’re talking about! What about my Papà? We can’t leave him. I need to bury him.”
She’s fucking scared. I need to connect with her. I can’t lose her, she’s mine.
Rhett moves his hand up, and holds her neck, gazing into her glazed eyes.
“Baby, please calm down. I’m not the bad guy here. I’m here to protect you and your brothers.”
Belle’s eyes roam back and forth, searching for the truth in his soft turquoise eyes.
“You’re serious? You want me to just leave, when my Papà has been killed and I don’t fucking know why? I don’t know where my brothers are at! The man that I want is here, out of the blue, telling me that I’m in danger! What the fuck am I supposed to believe!”
Huge tears roll down her cheeks, her face is pale, and her lower lip trembles.
Rhett pulls her closer into his arms, moving his hands up her and down her back to keep her warm.
“Baby, I’m your man. Trust me. I know that you’re scared but I promise you that I’m here to protect you and your family.”
Rhett kisses her forehead holding her tight.
Belle closes her eyes tight, starts to melt into him, giving in.
Omg! What should I do? Trust my heart or do what my Papà instructed. Not to trust anyone! But Rhett is not anyone, he’s my man. I know he is my soul.

Review: Unexpected Allies

Unexpected Allies Unexpected Allies by Cheryllynn Dyess
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Elizabeth, her coven, and the rest of the world have absolutely made my heart soar. Again! I absolutely love all the characters in the book. Including Celeste! I was recently quizzed about her name and blanked out. All I could do is remember that I wanted to cuddle the deer held in front of me. Anyways, I was not expecting many of the twists that came out of this book.

The characters are all loveable. I have to be honest. I get Sari and Sara mixed up sometimes. Especially if I’m reading too fast. Which, I’m prone to do sometimes. Either way, I feel like such a part of this world when I read this book. I’m not sure exactly where I’d be. I’d like to think I’d be a witch!

I fully recommend this book! I cannot wait to get the sixth book in my hands. This has quickly become one of my favorite series of all times. Hands down. No questions asked. The author has a way of dragging you into the story and hitting you in all your feels. She’s a terrific writer!

Review: Nightworld Academy: Term One

Nightworld Academy: Term One Nightworld Academy: Term One by L.J. Swallow
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Maeve finds herself expelled from school after making a drastic move to save a boy's life. She'd seen his death in a vision. Her aunt volunteers to pay for her to go to a private academy that will help her with her "condition". It doesn't take long for Maeve to realize this isn't a normal school and her visions aren't hallucinations.

I really enjoyed the story. It was invigorating. It was like House of Night and Vampire Academy. There's even a character that reminds me of Adrian from Vampire Academy. There's a girl in here that makes Aphrodite look like a docile cat. It's insane! I did have a few problems with this book though. Mainly the fact that I felt some scenes were rushed over when they should have been enhanced more. I also felt that focuses were placed where they shouldn't be.

The characters. I really feel like Amelia should have played a bigger part in the book than she did. I'm also torn between admiring Maeve and getting really annoyed by her narrow-minded opinions. She is great, but she really needs to keep her opinions to herself and stop justifying her opinions without even listening to the other people.

The narrators weren't really horrible, but they could have done a better job. I've listened to work from Sarah Colton before. I'm not sure I've listened to anything by Steve Campbell before. Either way, I like to keep an e-book companion with me. I may not follow super close, but I do follow. They changed the wording a bit in multiple places. I wouldn't really mind that because it doesn't change the story at all. However, they actually left off about a page of a chapter. I couldn't overlook that.

Overall, I really enjoyed the story. I do hope that Maeve has a personality change as the series continues. I don't see her keeping friends if she keeps looking down on everybody for what they do in life. I really adore character transformations. They add value to a book series. I can't wait to continue this series.

Review: Blocked

Blocked Blocked by Elise Faber
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Brit is an amazing goalie for a hockey team. She gets targeted for a hazing that turns violent. When she finally gets the courage to report the incident, it's handled by kicking her off the team. She finds herself on a better team, but the incident follows her. She's blackmailed into doing something that doesn't make her comfortable at all.

I really enjoyed this story very much. It was inspiring. I'm not sure I could call myself a hockey fan. I'm enamored with reading about it. In both fiction and non-fiction. I just don't think I could actually watch a game. But I digress. It's hard not to get pulled into this story and want the best for all the good guys. Even if it can be a bit cheesy and predictable at times.

Brit is this amazingly fierce woman She doesn't seem to realize it about herself, but it's true. She survived something that no woman should ever have to go through and kept going. She didn't let it hold her back. Yes, she lived with fear, but she faced those fears every day. Steffan was a pretty amazing person as well. He may be rough around the edges, but he means well. I'd of loved to see more of Brit's brother and Steffan's mom. They were both pretty amazing as well.

The narrators were fantastic. I have listened to other books by Lacy Laurel, but I'm not sure if I've heard anything narrated by Gregory Salinas. Either way, both narrators were amazing. I can honestly say Lacy has become one of my favorite narrators. She just has this quirky tone that I adore. As for Gregory, I love his voice. I can't describe it without sounding like I'm insulting it. But it's just... alluring.

If I were to have judged a book by its cover, I wouldn't have picked this book up. Don't get me wrong. The cover is absolutely amazing. It just doesn't seem like it would be my type of book. Either way, I was curious so I read it. And trust me when I say, I'm glad I did. There were parts that I found very cheesy. There are some overplayed troupes in here as well. The book is still great. And honestly, troupes are a thing for a reason. They work.

Review: The Lie

The Lie The Lie by Callie Rose
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Harlow's life is thrown upside down as the person that matters most in her world is thrown in prison for a crime she didn't commit. She's betrayed by the boys who she thought would never let her down. She feels helpless on proving her mother's innocence when the only proof she had was deleted by the boys. She has no idea who she can trust. Things seem impossible for her.

I really enjoyed this book. When I started book one, I didn't think I'd enjoy it at all. I thought it would be one cringe fest after another. The type of story that gets parodied if you will. It was recommended to me, though, so I thought why not give it a chance? I'm glad I did. It's way better than I gave it credit for. They say don't judge a book by it's cover. I say it shouldn't be judged by anything other than the story itself. Even genre and blurbs can be deadly.

The characters are just so amazing. We have the amazing Harlow. She's devoted and kind. She is strong willed and know what she wants. We also have the handsome Lincoln. I must say though, what is it about Lincolns in tv shows, movies, and books being so dark and broody? Then we have the intuitive River. River is my favorite. I just adore him. We can't forget the mischievous Dax and Chase. They aren't quite as bad as the Weasley twins, but they are as alluring. I'd of liked to see a bit more of the parents, though. I get why that isn't a thing.

The narrator was pretty great. Her name is Amanda Stribling. She did the first book too if I remember correctly. She knows just how to maximize the emotions felt to make you feel the emotions too. It's a raw talent that many narrators have, but not all. Those that do, quickly become my favorites. I'll definitely be checking out other works by her.

This book is wonderful. I really enjoyed it. It's been an emotional roller coaster for me that I'm glad I took a chance on. I won't say my friend's name in my review, but I do have them to both thank and yell at for recommending this book to me. The yelling part is only because I'm so hooked that I want to dive right into the third book right now. I can't though. Soon though. Very soon.

Review: Married to the Alien Doctor

Married to the Alien Doctor Married to the Alien Doctor by Alma Nilsson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I can't say that I was madly in love with this book, but I can't say I hated it either. It's one of those books that you're intrigued enough to give a chance, but not enough to rave over and deem a favorite. I found the book a bit cringy, but I recognize that it could have been way worse. I expected this book to be fully sexual with a bit of a story mixed in. I was wrong. There are sex scenes in it, but it doesn't overpower the story like I thought it would.

The characters were okay, but they could have used a bit more personality to connect with. For a lack of a better way to describe it, all of the characters were more scientific than personal. I think that's the way they are supposed to be written though. This is supposed to take place in the way distant future. Like thousands of years from now. And the lack of connection could just be me.

I really did enjoy hearing Holly Holt telling this story. She did bring some life into the story. I want to say that I've listened to something of hers before, but I can't say for sure. I'll have to go through the books I've listened to so I know for sure. That will take some time though. Even if I haven't, I'll definitely give books narrated by her a chance in the future.

While I enjoyed this story, I will probably not continue the series. I didn't read the first book, and I probably won't. This story has great potential. I'm sure that it will thrill many readers. It just didn't do it for me. It lacked some things that I felt it needed more of. I am willing to admit that it could have been way worse. I'm glad I gave it a chance. It was adorable and unique. I enjoyed that aspect of it.

Review: Hardcore Twenty-Four

Hardcore Twenty-Four Hardcore Twenty-Four by Janet Evanovich
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book was kind of different from the rest of the series. There were some books that took place between the series that involved Diesel but none of the actual series did. Until this one anyways. I was expecting him to be all over the story like he was the in-between novels. He wasn't. That was disappointing. The book was pretty amazing though. I enjoyed it. The only thing I didn't care for was that many points were kind of rushed through. Well, in my opinion anyway.

I always adore the characters in this series. Stephanie will always be just her usual pessimistic self. In a good way though. Lula is all about positivity and a thrill seeker. Grandma Maazur will always be a thrill seeker as well. She's hilarious! Then you have the sexy Morelli who is pretty down to Earth with a touch of a wild side. And, my favorite, Ranger. The sexy business owner with a mysterious and dark past.

I really have enjoyed this series. I can't believe I only have one left to read before the next one comes out. I thought I'd never catch up with this series. And yet here I am! It's thrilling and exciting! I know that there are many people that probably want this series to end already. I can see why. I don't mind it though. Evanovich can write as many as she wants. As long as she keeps the series hilarious and have me wanting more!

She’s the definition of off-limits. If our families knew how we look at each other, and kiss each other… Star-crossed doesn’t even begin to describe our fate.

Excerpt  - Juno
Juno waited until she could see the moon through the wooden slats of the boathouse, a bright slice of white that shone on her seat by the window. She zipped her jacket in the darkness and drew the hood over her head, ignoring the hunger that rumbled through her stomach.
“Where are you going?” Pillar mumbled from her cot in the corner. “S’not morning yet.”
“To check the nets,” Juno whispered, though they were the only two on duty tonight. “I’ll be back before our shift ends.”
“But…”
She walked over, barely able to make out Pillar’s shadowed form as she reclined on a blanket, half asleep.
“I have to try to get something this time,” Juno said.
“It’s probably just not…fish season.”
Juno chuckled despite the nerves that hit her. “Every day is fish season.” She poked her friend in the side. “I’ll bring you back a big one with whiskers so you can give it a huge kiss.”
“You’re disgusting.”
Juno turned to check the crate by the bed. She found the old rusty whistle they always kept there in case they needed to call for help. They’d never had any problems before, but people from the other community had crossed the border before. It was more than possible they’d do it again.
“You have your knife?” Juno asked, checking the sheath at her waist at the same time. Her makeshift knife was little more than a scrap of metal sharpened to a fine point, but she felt safer with it.
“Yes, Mom.”
She tucked her hair under her hood and straightened. If she was going to sound like a mom, she might as well do it all the way. “Don’t fall asleep.”
Pillar sat up, tucking her knees under her chin. “You should take the whistle just in case.”
“You need it. I won’t be long.” Especially if the nets were empty.
“Be careful.”
She grabbed her bucket by the door, then pulled a basket down from a coat hook as well. If she was lucky, it wouldn’t just be fish; there would be crab in the pots, too. She eased open the door and stepped into the night.
Juno followed the light of the moon and the smell of salt in the air. The rest of her community was quiet, asleep in their shacks or the forgotten buildings they used as homes. Some of them stayed in makeshift tents on the edges of their territory, keeping watch over the perimeter.
She saw the people from the other community near the perimeter often throughout the day, but they knew, just like she did, to stay on their side. Crossing over, even out of curiosity, would probably get her killed. Beat up at best.

Even if they were the ones causing all the problems.

Review: Wake's Claim

Wake's Claim Wake's Claim by Michelle Dare
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I'm going to be completely honest here. I almost put this book down. The beginning of the book got under my skin so much. I just can't even begin to explain it. One of my biggest turn offs with books is the angst stuff that tends to hit lovers at random. Well, mainly when it's been drawn out in the most excruciating and painful way possible. I stuck with the book anyways. I'm glad I did. It really turned around. The only thing I want to critique is that I wish they had drawn out some of the things that happened in the book.

I really adored Paige. In ways, I saw myself in her. She's sweet and loyal. I loved her friend Ari too. Wake is the problem I had with the story. I mean I get that he'd been burned in the past, but COME ON! It was a bit dramatic. All the characters were pretty amazing. Some had too much time in the background for my liking. My favorite was Solomon. He kind of reminded me of Spike from Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

Both narrators were pretty great. They made a great duo. I'm not sure if I've listened to anything from Sarah L. Colton before. I feel like I have heard at least one book by Troy Duran though. I can't say for sure. Either way, I'd be willing to hear other books narrated by both of them. They have talent.

The book was really great after I got past the part that was getting under my skin. I'm really glad that I gave it a chance and stuck with it. I fully encourage anybody who struggles with it to stick with it to at least the halfway point. If they still don't like it after that, then they are more than welcome to put it down. They will be missing out though. This book gets great. I see it's a book 1. I'll have to look into the rest of the books.

Review: Magic Heist

Magic Heist Magic Heist by Mary Karlik
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

While this book wasn't exactly as wonderful as the first book, in my opinion, it was still very wonderful. Also, if I'm being honest, both books were very cheesy. I think that's what makes them both charming to me. I also have to give the author points for creativity and uniqueness. She managed to make very popular topics shine in a brand new light. It's like she made the impossible seem possible. I can't wait to continue this series. Especially with the way it ended.

The characters are all great, but I can't lie. Sometimes I got a little overwhelmed and confused with all the characters. I adore Layla, but there are times she kind of gets on my nerves a bit. I adore Ian as well. He could be a book boyfriend, but there are times he just lacks the flair I need and want in a book boyfriend. He's still amazing though.

I have no complaints where the narrator is concerned. Her name is Ruth Urquhart. I am pretty sure she did the first book as well, but I'm not a hundred percent. I'd be curious to try other books she has narrated quite frankly. I'd love to know if the accent in the book is her real accent. It's so adorable!

This has been a great journey that I'm excited to continue on to see where it heads. While this may not be one of my favorite book/series of all times, I have enjoyed it quite a bit. I've enjoyed seeing familiar things in a new light. It's been quite enlightening and enjoyable. I'm glad I was introduced to these books.

Excerpt
In the next moment, he hears someone on horseback thundering near,
as dust-devils rise high in the air. Amidst the foggy debris and dust, he
hears a man holler out, “Whoa,” as the horse comes to a grinding halt,
sending clouds of dust billowing.

Through glazed eyes, Hidden Spirit sees a soldier hurrying over, then
hunkering down next to him, where he spits hard on the ground. “Another
stinking Indian. You alive, boy?” he asks as he shoves him over.

Hidden Spirit’s eyes flicker open and he stares into rabid eyes, cold as
frost. The soldier smirks. “Looks to me like you’re half-dead. Maybe I could
do you a favor and finish you off.”
