Review: The Every Stone: Book One of the Gempendium

The Every Stone: Book One of the Gempendium The Every Stone: Book One of the Gempendium by E.A. Sandrose
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Yrund is taken from her home and forced into mining. The people who have taken her captive are looking to collect all stones. Especially the every stone. This stone is known to have the power to do everything. It will make the owner of the stone very powerful. Yrund does not believe in this stone. She thinks it's just a tall tale. All she wants to do is go home and be in the presence of her family again. She works hard hoping to eventually earn her freedom. Everything is going fine until something unexpected happens, and she finds herself on the run. She also finds herself in possession of a very valuable stone.
I didn't really care for this story at all. The only things that really made this story readable were the stone and the amazingly rich culture that surrounds the story. I mean I didn't hate it. I enjoyed it enough to keep reading it despite not really liking the main character at all. The story could be very strong. It has a great uniqueness about it. I just feel like it fell flat a bit. There are so many places that really could have been elaborated on so much. I also didn't like how critical and judgmental the main character was over everybody else. It just got so belittling and condescending. The stone was a true gem though. Not sure if the pun was intended there or not.
This book was narrated by Ulka S Mohnty. I absolutely loved her narration! It was amazing. I felt like I was actually a part of the world. The accent she gave was beautiful. It felt authentic. It felt real. I want to say it probably is her native accent, but I don't want to presume here. People that presume things irritate me. But I digress. I really would love to listen to other books narrated by her. Her voice is just so soothing and alluring. Hopefully, that doesn't come off as creepy. It's just my honest opinion.
I really came across as aggressive in this review. I wasn't intending to. I did enjoy the story. I just feel like it didn't really meet expectations. If it weren't for the silly stone, I think I would have been very annoyed with the story and character development. That being said, I did not hate the book. I may even give the book another chance in the future if I'm being honest. I'd also give other books written by the author a chance.

Review: Dead Ever After

Dead Ever After Dead Ever After by Charlaine Harris
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Sookie's world is turned upside down when she discovers that her former best friend who tried to kill her, Arlene, has been released from prison. She's even more shocked when Arlene comes in looking for a job. Doing her best to keep her cool, she turns her down and tells her that she doesn't think it's a good idea that they are near each other. She's shocked to find Arlene murdered and left in the dumpster in the back of Merlotte's. The evidence points to Sookie. If that isn't enough, she is struggling to figure out where the relationship with her and Eric is going. Every day it looks more and more like it's over.
I'm really sad that this series is over. I get it though. I mean it's kind of obvious in this book and a few others that the author was just over writing it. The story had run its course in her eyes. Which is totally okay. It happens. Rather stop it when it's still good than keep it dragging when she's not happy writing it. I appreciate that in more ways than I can explain. I do wish I could have seen more of something that happens in this book. I know this isn't a popular opinion, but I really didn't care about the relationship between Eric and Sookie. I mean I get they both loved and cared about each other, but I don't feel like they were ever in love. I don't feel like what they had for each other was really enough to stay together. I guess that's kind of obvious but yeah.
This book was narrated by Johanna Parker. The entire series was narrated by her. I was so impressed with her narration in the first book that I wound up buying all of them to listen to just to hear her voice. I have them all in ebook. I was more than content to read them, but I was buddy reading and fell behind on the first book. The rest is history. I guess in the end, getting behind did me a favor.
I have really loved this series so much. This is technically my second time around reading the series. The first time around I didn't read them in order and I couldn't remember where I left off. This time, I read them in order and read the books that I never had a chance to read. I'm so glad that I did. I will most likely read them again in the future. This is one of my favorite series of all time. I suppose now that I'm done reading the series that it's time to give True Blood a chance.

Review: Einstein's Compass

Einstein's Compass Einstein's Compass by Grace Allison Blair
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Albert is given a wonderful gift when he's young. This gift can help him travel through time and space. It helps him collect very important data he needs for his scientific research. What he doesn't know is that evil is lurking about. They want the compass in which he has possession of. They will stop it at nothing to get this compass from him. They will take down whoever they need to get the compass. Including Albert.
This book really drug my emotions through the rocks. I can't even. There were so many sad parts. Then there were parts that made me angry. Then there were parts where I was at the edge of my seat trying to figure out what was going on! It was all over the place. It was intense. It was thrilling. I loved every minute of it. I find that the very idea behind the story was brilliant. I get that it's actually based on Albert Einstein. I think that's what adds to the allure of the story for me in my opinion.
This book was narrated by Curt Bonnem. As if my emotions weren't already in the raw as it was. He had to go intensify them by intensifying his voice in all the right moments! I don't think it's fair! He has a pretty impressive library that he's narrated. This is the first book that I've listened to by him. It's not going to be my last. Not by any means. He has some amazing talent.
I gave this some time to let my emotions settle. It was for the best. It's a great book. I'm not going to lie, the book could have been expanded a bit. It could have had a lot more scenes added to it in all truth. Most of the story could have been told more about Einstein's point of view so that we could see the beauty of his genius. Or his points of view could have been added to more and the other points of view stayed the same. Either way, I enjoyed it very much.
